Photography On The Road

 

 

Most people know that I am a photographer.

 What you might not know is that I am also a Transit Bus Driver.

 Some of my best ideas come from the roads that I travel, sometimes in upwards of 300 miles a day. My day starts at 4 am on most days when most people are still snuggled under their covers. By 5:15 or 5:20 am I am on the road to pick up passengers. Presently, my mornings start in complete darkness with the occasional fog. I am often graced with seeing the sunrise as I go through my mornings and later in the year I also get to see the sunset. 

 You might ask what any of this has to do with my work as a photographer. Here goes: My run in the morning goes till 8:30 Am and I am off till 13:45 (1:45 PM). In that time I have a most wonderful break. Typically I grab a snack and go photograph for a couple of hours and then take a nap for an hour around noon. With the remaining time I relax, check my email, and check out a few frames. Other days I go to a local Wi-Fi spot and work on post processing for my website, customers, or Etsy shops: Frett Fine Art and Chaise Longue Gallery of Stacy Frett. I feel incredibly blessed with the day job that I have. I can even schedule shoots in between, but prefer those to be done on Saturdays or Sundays. I am typically busy with other projects as well.

What Do You See?!

Nothing like seeing a beautiful photograph of another person to mess with your own self-esteem. I have heard that people are getting plastic surgery to make their "selfies" better looking...that is sad. People like and buy "pretty". I myself am not immune to this. 

 Pictured above are two images. Both are me on different days. In the left one I am wearing a wig, make-up, sunglasses, and a smile. The one on the right is me. Just me, no additions sitting in a restaurant having a quiet lunch. I guarantee that the situation/experiance would be different if I was in the getup on the left. 

My main point in showing this is that people must pay attention to what they are seeing and not let themselves fall prey to the damage of self-esteem from not knowing how these are constructed. It is fun to look at these images, but don't forget what a real human being looks like.

How I See The World Sometimes

My view of things is somewhat backward at times. This morning I took this photo because something in the back of my mind said do it. I always follow through and have yet to be let down. Some call it a gut feeling, an inkling, or a notion.

The resulting photograph is an abstract version of the American flag. I bumped up the color in Photoshop. The interesting thing is the original position. My brain took all this in and still was able to find a commen symbol out of this wooden structure. I love how our brains really assist in the creative process even when we are not conscious of it!

Get To Work!

"Make Art, Not Excuses" is a personal mantra that keeps me motivated to stay creative and get things done. I take a lot of photographs on a weekly basis. Since December 2013 I have shot about 10,000+ frames on one camera alone.

 My Canon EOS 70D is my primary camera for creative projects and day to day shooting. Am proud to say that my work has gotten some nice comments from Canon.

This really made me pleased to have them say that! I have been using their cameras since I first shot film on a Canon AE-1 way back when.

When I took these images it was funny in that I wasn't really in the mood to take them. In fact, I was actually fairly sick at the time.

 There are images that you must take or you will never have that chance again. Be it for purposes of Art or family memories, never second guess yourself.

 Get out there and take that photograph! Seriously, get to work. Second chances are rare. Go Make Some Art!

The Cycle Continues..."NEXT" She Yelled!

Packed up recent solo show from the guild and now planning for the next solo show thanks to Art Hand at his studio/gallery in Batavia for July. Different work this time. Similar size though. Somewhere in there is the MAGPix Show to. It is nice to show my work again after all these years. So many to be thankful to and for: those that believed in me, those that didn't,  and those who had no idea what the hell my work was about. All of this reminded me to get back into what is my true calling and to use my gifts. I actually received a grant for the first one that I wrote in the arts. Looking Back On Twelve Years Ago With Appreciation and Fondness

Want to know what inspires me, where I come from and what I do, read this article from 2002. Not much about me or my work has changed. Perhaps I should say it has evolved. I still enjoy the oppurtunity to work with artists that have intellectual disabilities and in many mediums. I miss those days way back when, but things change. I have made Kentucky my home now. It is just nice to look back and remember the good times, people, and their impact on my life. For this show at the Arc Gallery, I shot a series of beautiful portraits where each artist is wearing their particular hat design. It looked great and I was so proud of the whole project. Somewhere I still have video...so take a moment and have a read, even if they spelt my name wrong, which always happens to me...:)

This is "Life Reflected". I took it in 2012 as part of my Reflection series and it is also part of my Self-Portrait Series as well. It is a single exposure of me reflected through pains of glass that had wild weeds growing through the glass. It was a found setup as I was working with existing objects. Light source was early morning direct sun. the only manipulation of the photograph was that I tinted it to be sepia.

The above image is called "Her Hat" it is part of my self-portrait seris as well. It has a very somber tone to it. Often I shoot many images in black and white because that is my favorite way to capture the mood. High contrast has always interested me as well. it is the closest way I can get to a woodblock print without actually carving a plate. Growing up I was often amazed by the artist Kathe Kollwitz She was a german printmaker. Some of her work was very controversial and her studio was bombed by the Nazis. I am not a political artist, nor a printmaker, but her style has had a great influence on my work. 

Currently just wrote a grant proposal to try and get my self-portrait series funded. I am not going to say which one, I am still a little superstitious at this point. I will definately know in the upcoming months though.

Dreaming of Possibilities

New Changes in my life over the past several years. I used to plan in six month increments, now I plan in one and two year ones. It seems since moving down to Murray Ketucky that my creative work is really growing. I never thought that the subject matter of nature photography would interest me, but it is currently selling in this community. I have also finished writing a grant at the suggestion of my mentor. It was such a thought provoking process. I really put myself into the project. Am hoping it is accepted as it would fun my upcoming work and really challenge me creatively. 

I have really been all over the place over the past three years emotionally speaking. My mother died and it has really had an impact on my view of life and working towards my dreams. I have found that investing myself in the community here has really paid off. like I said above, I am really into making my work happen here. I work toward things down the road. I have met some great people down here, who have really been positive and lovely. It is those people that keep me from packing up and moving. I have made three times the amount of good work that I made while living in Chicago and suburbs. Not as many distractions and more time to really think. I miss the bustle of city life, but Chicago will always be there waiting me to visit.!

In The Toilet at the Murray Art Guild

Here at the Murray Art Guild is a new international show called "In The Toilet" that I was graciously allowed to curate by Debbi Danielson, Executive Director of the guild in Murray, KY.  She also designed the beautiful arrangement of flowers for the show. 

People who know me and my sense of humor didn't know what to think of this show. Now with it being set up, most of the skepticism has waned and have been met with many postive responses. Even some of the older members of the Murray Art Guild are promoting the show to visitors here. That means so much to me when other people are just as excited to tell others about this. It really has been an amazing time of it! Rick Mjos donated the vinyl lettering for the show. Basically there was no budget for the show and it was still able to fruition. People are so helpful here in the south I am coming to find out. So much diffenrent from the art atmosphere that I was used to in Chicago!

Local artists as well as some from as far as Singapore, Germany, and the Netherlands have contributed work. I am forever in the gratitude to the ladies of fPOE (Female Photographers of Etsy), who made a substantial contribution of work to this endeaver! The first entry in fact was from DK Miller (The Shutterbug Eye). She is a wonderful photographer and friend from long ago. You can find her work on Etsy, Through the Chicago Photography Center, and with The Artisan Group. There are many other talented artists to in this show as well.

Currently I am surprised by the submissions. There is a great deal of time and care that was taken by each artist. I was half expecting some crude or unusable images to be sent in. That ended up not being the case, people took thoughtful and funny images. I was told by one of the contributors, that she had been dreaming about toilets upon hearing about the show. What a compliment!

I am also very proud of the communtity photography group that I facilitate called MAGPix. Most of the members took the time to enter creative work. I had given them fair warning about what I was putting together and they gladly accepted the challenge. It was also my hope that more contributions would come from the other local photography groups. The Marshall County Photography Club had an entry by Phyllis Russell. It quite lovely! On a side note MAGPix Currently has work hanging at the local coffee shop called Fidalgo Bay.

If you have some extra time please stop by the Murray Art Guild and check out the show. it will be up till October 1st. I will then be putting it online for all the lovely people to view, who couldn't come to see the show in person! In case you are wondering, many of these works are for sale! Part of the sales will go to the Murray Art Guild and to the artists. Thank you and have a great day!
